I have to build another landing pad. The "Leap Into The Void" is ready to happen. I have to tell Barbara. My brother gets his own room tomorrow. I get to move all my stuff into the basement.

I've solved it. I couldn't figure out a way to pad my landing from the science building. Cardboard boxes are the way to go. I went through the trash cans at school next to the cafeteria for two hours, and I picked out all the drink boxes I could find. The kind that come with the little sharp straw that you poke into the box for a refreshing juice beverage.

I got three trashbags full, and I tested them by throwing my brother's television out of our room onto my prototype receptacle (it's got a papier mache shell covered with foam rubber, and it's filled with drink boxes). I didn't throw the TV far enough, so it kind of missed the target.

I tried again with my dad's computer monitor (a thirteen- inch VGA Sony), and the monitor hit the target and survived intact! It doesn't work anymore, though. My mom wasn't too happy when she came home. I said that Mike watches too much TV anyway, but she said all these things about respecting the property of others and needing to learn responsibility. Now I have to start taking Ritalin again.

That statistic doesn't surprise me at all. The spoken (or sung) word acts on a person in a vastly different way than the written word. It takes a shortcut into areas which text simply cannot reach without a certain level of predeveloped receptivity. Music is even more effective than talking. Music makes people laugh out loud, cry in public, and gets stuck in their head for days. The spoken word is less powerful than that, and the written word seems to be losing more and more relevance to modern society.

However, I don't think that's a good thing. The written word has an entirely different set of powers all its own, and if used correctly can have a huge influence. Its powers of lasting are immense, and its ability to encompass extremely minute detail cannot be duplicated by other means. A painting and an essay can both be extremely moving and evocative, yet in different ways.

I live in a basement. It's nice and cool during the summer. I like jumping off things. I've never tried Ritalin, but I'm using Paxil right now. Good luck with your continuing search for a landing pad. Sounds like you're making informed and creative choices. Be sure to tell Barbara. Don't let her miss it (I have a feeling she'll be interested, even if she refuses to show it).

Take care

I use no meds. Well, thats a lie - I take antihystamines for hay fever. Does that count in any way that could possibly change me?

Perhaps its not discernable.

People have always been my landing pads - life is balance - and for me to enjoy metaphorical highness, means someone suffers when I fall to earth. I only realised that recently. I am drunk today, and what I'm saying is making sense to me.

Billy. Glad you liked the joke at my site, though it was intended for someone older than you (well, considering the stuff that even Disney has it their movies these days, it's not too bad, I guess). Anyway, I remember it from a joke book, "Rude Jokes," by H. Allen Smith, a famous humorist of yore and founder of a Texas chili cookoff with his name. I've been trying to find a copy of the book for many years, but it seems to have dropped off the map.

Cheers.
